Avoid Scams Targeting Taxpayers

Have you ever received a phone call from “the IRS?” Well in case you were wondering that likely wasn’t the IRS calling you. It was a scam, someone trying to get your personal information. They prey on unsuspecting people who believe them, and why wouldn’t you? No one wants to be on the wrong side of the IRS.

The IRS has communicated on their website that they will never:

Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.

Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

These scammers are very smart and sound very convincing. Their tactics must work because they continue to target taxpayers and try to stay a step ahead by coming up with new and creative ways to trick unsuspecting people.

If you receive one of these calls it is best to just hang up.

Protect yourself and protect your loved ones. The elderly unfortunately are the victims many times.
